FS#13760 — Strasbourg <> Frankfurt
Incident Report for Network & Infrastructure
Resolved
The Strasbourg <> Frankfurt connection is down. We're searching for the origin of the issue.

Update(s):

Date: 2015-06-26 10:31:27 UTC
According to feedback, impacts on the cable this morning may have been caused by work currently in progress on the Pont de l'Europe between Strasbourg and Kehl. The system hasn't detected any variation since 12:00. We will deploy the 2nd protection link to mount the SBG<>FRA protection in 100G.

An impact on the fibre cable between Strasbourg and the 1st amp site in Kirchfield, Germany, caused the 100G fibre cables to go down. We don't know the exact cause. We're in contact with the cable manufacturer to find out if work was carried out on the cables this morning. We believe that the cable was perhaps tampered with. It could aslo be linked to a garter on an amp site. The cable was not cut off but performance deteriorated enough to impact the SBG <> FRA circuits which are in 16QAM. The RBX <> GRA circuits that are in QPSK (techno so a bit less demanding in terms of optical performance) stayed up but were limited, so the traffic was impacted.

We will put on hold the work for the other FRA <> SBG cable, scheduled for today, while we wait for feedback from our provider.

There was an outage for 10 minutes between SBG and Frankfurt.

explanations:
We've recently implemented 4x100G on the new DWDM on one of the 2 fibres between SBG and Frankfurt. The old 10G links on the other fibre were still up but without traffic. This morning, we'd just cut off the 10G links, the 100G links went down - we're still trying to find out why. We've therefore reactivated the 10G circuits on the old network while we wait to remount the 100G links on the new network.
